The 3 monks.. The example for Teamwork..

Three Monks is a Chinese animated feature film, produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio.

The film is based on the ancient Chinese proverb "One monk will shoulder two buckets of water, two monks will share the load, but add a third and no one will want to fetch water". A noticeable point is that the film does not contain any dialogues, allowing it to be watched by any culture.

The movie can be divided into 4 parts :-

a.) When only monk is present in the movie :- From the movie, we can see that, When one monk was there, he was happy to do work and collect water from river to the monastery. He was happy with his life and satisfied.

b.) When another monk joined :- We can see that, when other monk joined, the first monk wishes not to do any work and asks other monk to do the work of bringing water. But when other monk demands equal distribution of work, the first monk tries to escape from work by putting weight of pot containing water towards the other monk. After much deliberation, both of them decide to share work. As a result of it, productivity increases..

c.) The arrival  of third monk on the next day morning :- The arrival of a third monk prompts everyone to expect that someone else will take the work. Consequently, no one fetches water even though everybody is thirsty. At night, due to a rat, candle fells down leading to a fire in the temple. The three monks finally unite together and make a combined effort to put out the fire.

d.) Eventually at the end, all three monks realize that, if they work together, they can achieve more and can be more productive. Hence, they unite together and comes up with an innovative idea of filling water.

Important Learnings :-

1. Innovation :- In the movie, the monks initially follow conventional approach and thus realize that they take more time. Hence they come up with an innovative idea of filling water at the end. Innovation can be continuous or drastic. In this movie, it is drastic innovation.

2. Job Distribution :- In an organization, it is the responsible of the manager to utilize the resources and capabilities of employees properly. The manager should distribute the job within employees and thus improving the productivity and achieving the end result. In this movie, as we can see, though there were three monks, they ultimately end up with no water. But when all three monks divide work within them, it becomes easier for them to work.

3. Teamwork :- In a team, together people can achieve more. The three monks could have teamed up initially at bought water from pond. But they realized the importance of team work only after the monastery got fire, Hence, in any Organization, teamwork plays an important role. The following video also gives an example of Teamwork

4. Synergy :- The concept of Synergy can also be realized over here in this video. Synergy means, "Whole is greater than parts". When monks worked together, they were able to let off fire early.

5. Productivity :- It can be observed in the above video that, As and when monks teamed up, their productivity increased. If we consider that, the effort was 100 Joules inorder to bring 2 buckets when one monk worked, then when two monks worked, the efforts was about 80 joules to bring one bucket, thus energy is saved and productivity is increased. Whereas, if you consider the last innovative approach, the effort is almost negligible and many buckets of water can be obtained with least efforts.  The work conditions are also better in 3rd method and thus encourages monks for doing more work. Thus Productivity also increases.

Overall, the video shows how teamwork can change things and can make work easier than before if we work together with Co-ordination.
